Professional Development: A Deep Look at My Personality

Posted By Smart Living on Sep 10, 2010 at 3:15PM

It's always tough to take a good, hard look at yourself and to see your strengths and weaknesses laid out in front of you. I experienced that vulnerability recently when I took up my friend's challenge to take a personality quiz as part of my professional development journey.

Personality quizzes seem like pure fun, but they can also help you think about how you work and what you might want to work on. Analyzing the results will enable you to figure out things like your communication style, know what kinds of people you work well with, and help understand what your potential weaknesses might be. For example, if you find that you're more of an introvert, perhaps public speaking is one of the things you should work on.

To find out what kind of results I had,

I did a couple of free online Myers Briggs-type tests last night and came to the conclusion that I was an ENFP. What makes ENFP people tick are things like variety, future possibilities, and people. Finding out I was an ENFP really helped me put things into perspective. For example, now that I realize I value variety, I should try to learn a skill in several different ways just to prevent boredom. In addition to that, since future possibilities are always on the top of my mind, I should really write out and continually update my five-year plan so that I'll feel more at ease with myself.

These tests are a good stepping stone for self-awareness, which is what professional development is all about. A huge part of being confident in yourself comes simply from being self-aware and understanding your own style of doing things.

Find this activity interesting? Why not join me on my journey of professional development! To keep it fun and mix things up for you readers, I'm going to attempt to do a different activity every week.
